Top 10 Veg Street Foods to Eat in Kalbadevi – Mumbai

Kalbadevi derives its name from the Hindu Goddess and is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Mumbai. It still retains its quaint, historic quality; the streets are littered with traders of watches, bicycle parts and all things mechanical. That, and a lot of street food vendors. A day spent here is one where you’ll most certainly go home with a fully tummy, feeling content. We have reviewed many street food places in many parts of Mumbai but not many of them have come even close to having the amount of quality food that Kalbadevi has.

These places are guaranteed to give you a good time and leave you wanting more. PS – Please don’t eat all these items at once; although delicious, it might leave you with a bad stomach, so leave that to professionals like us!

1. Aloo Patties – Prahalad Patties Centre

Despite the scorching sun beating down on us, we reached this place and eagerly waited for our ordered to be prepared. The hot, beautiful dish was served, and one bite into it was enough to justify all the pains we took to get there. Simply ambrosial, the dish is almost perfect. The crisp outer layer bites into the crunchy, peanuty inside and is cushioned by a soft cloud of potatoes. The flavors, all work beautifully together. This is an experience that simply must be had.

2. Dabeli Bhel – Kutch ki Mashoor Dabeli Centre

A fusion of two famous street food items, this dish comes with a generous serving of onion sev, coriander and peanut bhel, topped with garnishing. The bhel and the Dabeli are both well done enough to be standalone dishes, but put together, they become simply magical. The buttery, sweet, sour and tangy tastes all play well together and make for dish that is to die for. We’ll be returning to get more of this dish for sure.

3. Dahi Wada – Street Side Stall

We would’ve never guessed that this tiny unassuming street side vendor would make such an amazing Dahi Wada. The wada is soft and fresh, and the dahi, thick. All the spices that go into the dish mix very well and are further aided by the presence of the soaked boondi, which absorbs the flavor and retains it. The taste of the sprouts and green chutney are lost in the amalgamation of the mild flavors in the dish, but we didn’t mind that one bit.

4. Kachori Chat – Uday Chat

This is a text book chat dish. The kind that you’d give your ‘angrezi’ friends to eat, to show them what chat is. The kachori is broken down and mixed with curd, sweet and sour chutneys and loads of different spices. All the ingredients are fresh and well done. We have never had the fortune of running into so many good dishes in a row and were simply stuffing ourselves with one dish after another.

5. Masala Kichiya – Rajasthan Ka Prasiddh Masala Kichiya Papad Centre

The name is a mouthful, and so is the dish. There are so many colourful elements in here that it’s not only a yummy dish, but also a visual treat. A word to the wise though, the dish is spicy and you’d do well to keep a bottle of water handy. The papad is thick and crispy, slathered with spices that impart an amalgam of flavors. However, the star of the dish is the chutney that is given as accompaniment. It was simply finger licking good.

6. Golden Cheese Masala Kichiya – Gopal Papadwala

The second papad dish on this list. While not as spicy as the first one, this one definitely holds its own when it comes to taste and flavor. The spices, veggies and chutneys are all topped with freshly grated cheese that just melts in the mouth. A delightful evening snack that can be had every day.

7. Kulcha Chana – Street Side Stall

The only thing wrong with the flavorful, spicy and well done chana is that the dish is a tad too watery. However, this is something that can be remedied rather easily. The kulcha is a ghee lover’s dream. It is slathered in ghee and has a succulent quality to it that is simply awesome. Definitely not a dish for the health conscious, this is a dish that street food should aspire to be. Our only gripe and a minor one was that the chana could have been thicker.

8. Mysore Dosa – Street Side Stall

The dosa gets its name from Mysore, the city of palaces, where its recipe was first conceptualized. Since then it has become a staple of street food aficionados all over India. While there was nothing spectacular that jumped out of the plate, the dish was pretty good. A great way to tease your taste buds and kill your hunger pangs at the same time. (Xanax online) One point of note though, the dosa is not the traditionally razor thin version that we’re used to seeing, it is a little thick and soft, which works well with the dish.

9. Mysore Masala Dosa – Shri Sainath South Corner

One of the most important aspects of the food experience is the quality of service at the establishment. We were greeted by a very friendly owner who took us on a nostalgic trip when he took offence to us not finishing the dish (in our defence, the quantity served is huge and we were quite full already). The dosa was tasty and crispy (unlike the previous one we had) and had a very authentic Mysore flavour to it. The veggies were mashed well and gave out a yummy flavor when mixed with spices. Unlike many street vendors selling Mysore Dosa, this one got it right and didn’t let the beetroot taste overpower the whole dish.

10. Poodla – Street Side Stall

A sort of dosa like pancake made with Besan flour, this is the dish that we ate as kids upon returning from a long day at school. The dish is equal parts nostalgia trip and equal parts food trip. There are a lot of flavors at work in it, but none of them overwhelming. A simple, beautiful and fun dish that we don’t get to see much of these days. We’re definitely going back home and asking mom to prepare this.
